Henry “Box” Brown was amazing. He was born into slavery in 1815 in Richmond, Virginia. After his wife and three children were sold away from him, he decided to attain freedom in an ingenious way. With the help of a free African American and a European American shoemaker, Henry Brown had himself mailed in a box to the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia. The box was 3 feet long, 2½ feet deep, and 2 feet wide. Brown was curled up in that box for twenty-seven hours. He traveled by wagon, train, and steamboat until he reached Philadelphia. There, members of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society were waiting to open the box and welcome him to freedom. The Anti-Slavery Society was started by European Americans in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
